2010-01-06 04:07:50 - Biological Hazard - Australia EDIS CODE: BH-20100106-24446-AUS Date & Time: 2010-01-06 04:07:50 [UTC] Area: Australia, State of New South Wales, Lake Tabourie, Not confirmed information! Description: Fisheries offficers are still investigating why more than 100 dead fish have been found in Lake Tabourie. The fish started to appear on Monday with local residents reported increased numbers yesterday (Tuesday). A spokesperson for Industry and Investment NSW Fisheries said officers had inspected the area near the lake entrance and had found approximately 140 dead fish - including silver trevally and sand whiting - in the area approximately 200 metres upstream of the entrance. She said the cause of death of the fish was still unknown but there appeared to be no obvious signs of disease. The spokesperson said a test on dissolved oxygen levels in the lake indicated levels were lower than usual. Water samples have been collected for bacterial analysis but results are not yet available. Naturally occurring, non-toxic species of algae are also present on the surface of the water in parts of the lake. The spokesperson said live, apparently healthy fish were also observed in the area and the fact that the dead fish are localised to one part of the lake suggests that it is a localised problem.
