Description: The Tripura government, facing a fresh outbreak of meningococcal meningitis, has sent an SOS to the Centre for emergency despatch of preventive vaccines. The officials of the Union ministry of health and family welfare assured their counterparts in Tripura that a consignment of 50,000 preventive vaccines were being rushed to the state to pre-empt any possible outbreak of the disease in the state’s hilly interiors. The additional director of health and family welfare department, B.K. Chanda, said four or five stray cases of the disease had been reported from tribal-dominated hilly interiors of Dhalai district and the department felt it essential to prepare for a larger outbreak. “Last year there was a major outbreak in remote Jamircherra, Gangangar, Kailash Roaja para, Malthling, Ramkanacherra villages in Dhalai district resulting in the deaths of 60 tribals, including women and children,” Chanda said. “We initially had to suffer a lot because of dearth of preventive vaccines and other medicines. This year, we are not taking any chances.” He said this time, death from meningitis had been reported from Manikpur and Chichingcherra villages. of Dhalai district though unofficially 11 had died of the disease last month.
