Description:

Flash flood hit several areas in Indonesia on Wednesday, killing two people in South Sulawesi province, reported Thursday. In Barru regency of South Sulawesi, two people were killed in floods due to heavy rains over the past few days. The two were working on their rice field when flash floods hit the area, the spokesman for the Barru district administration A Djalil Mappiare said. "They were believed to have been carried away by water currents and their bodies were found only on Wednesday morning," he said. The floods were caused by heavy rainfall in Barru district. As a result, a number of rivers overflowed, inundating houses and rice fields since Tuesday evening. In Pandeglang sub district of West Java province, a flash flood swept through three sub districts, inundating hundreds of homes and destroying household utensils. "The floods followed four hours of heavy rains, causing Cilampuyang and Cisata rivers to overflow," said Medi, a natural disaster mitigation volunteer. In the worst-hit area, 1.3-meter deep flood water inundated dozens of houses, causing damage to household utensils, he said. But, there was no immediate report of any casualties. Meanwhile, other flash flood hit hundreds of homes at Rancaekek Wetan village, Bandung district of West Java, after the Cikeruh River overflowed. The houses were inundated in 50-180 cm deep water, spokesman for the Bandung district administration Sutarno Yono said. By Wednesday evening, the local authorities were still evacuating residents of the village to safer grounds, he said.
