Description: At least 14 people were killed on Saturday and 21 others were injured when a bus plunged into a ravine between the cities of Tecate and Mexicali in the northern border state of Baja California, officials said. The director of the state’s civil defense agency, Alfredo Escobedo Ortiz, said that the accident occurred in the mountains before dawn. The official said that, according to preliminary reports, the accident occurred around 5:00 a.m. local time when the bus belonging to the Tierra del Sol tourist transport company was supposedly speeding. Escobedo Ortiz said that the bus was apparently providing a special service, since the line does not normally cover that route. The bus carrying people of all ages plunged into a 40-meter (130-foot) ravine at kilometer 44 (mile 27) as it headed for Mexicali. Emergency services and even army personnel rushed to the scene to aid the victims and found the vehicle completely destroyed. They said that several of the victims’ bodies, including a few minors, were scattered around the area where they had been thrown from the bus, which turned over several times as it crashed down the ravine. The bus had set out from the town of San Quintin south of Ensenada where farm workers gather, particularly from the southern state of Oaxaca. The bus line has its headquarters in Ensenada and often makes special trips to different destinations. The injured were taken to area hospitals, mostly in Mexicali.
