Description:

The unusually heavy and long drizzling rains that have been hitting Lima since the first hours of 2010 have left up to now 150 homeless families, whose houses have been declared as “uninhabitable” after being flooded with mudslides. The most affected districts are Comas (Northern Lima) and Villa María del Triunfo (South-East). The Mayor of Comas, Miguel Saldaña, reported that workers of the Municipality are currently doing clearing works in the most affected areas, and that Civil Defense brigades were providing help to the people. On the other side, the Mayor of Villa el Salvador, Jaime Zea, said that the intersection of two important avenues (El Sol and Juan Velasco) was so flooded that they needed three tank trucks and a sump pump to clean it. However, he remarked that they need help from Sedapal (Lima's water and sewage company) to clear the pipes obstructed with mud. Meanwhile, the Meteorologic Service (Senamhi) reported that the higher areas of Comas received 3l of water per sqm., and does not rule out the possibility of more rains.
