Situation Update No. 1 On 2010-01-04 at 04:01:55 [UTC] Event: Storm Surge Location: Canada Province of New Brunswick Port Elgin Situation: A state of emergency was still in effect early Sunday in Port Elgin after a storm surge flooded a number of houses, businesses and streets, and caused extensive damage to properties throughout the village. The strong winds and high tides accompanying Saturday’s winter storm caused water levels to rise several meters above normal, stranding several residents who had to be rescued by fire department members throughout the overnight hours. Some residents had to be evacuated using boats and tractors. On Sunday morning, village officials believed everyone had been accounted for but were concerned that the continuing stormy weather could cause further damage in the community, although wind and water levels weren’t expected to be as high as they were the previous night. | | | | |
