Description:

South Korea has reported its first outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in eight years. The virus was confirmed in six cows at a dairy farm in Puchon, 45 kilometres north of Seoul, the Ministry of Agriculture said on Thursday. The disease is highly infectious and primarily affects cattle, sheep and pigs but is not dangerous for humans. More than 2,000 animals including cows, deer and goats within a 500-metre radius of the affected area are to be slaughtered to prevent the spread of the disease. The movement of animals has also been restricted and disinfection carried out within 10 kilometres of the infected area. Around 160,000 pigs were slaughtered after an outbreak of the disease in South Korea in 2002.
