2010-02-02 04:07:31 - Biological Hazard - Australia EDIS CODE: BH-20100202-24765-AUS Date & Time: 2010-02-02 04:07:31 [UTC] Area: Australia, State of Queensland, Beachmere Lake, Beachmere Not confirmed information! Description: Dead fish have surfaced at Beachmere Lake for the second time in two months. Local resident Carolyn Kahl said a small number of fish had been found dead at the lake’s edges this morning, and the water had turned green. ‘’The dreadful smell is back,’’ she said. ‘’It’s really putrid. If I put my garbage bin in there, you wouldn’t see it. That’s how green it is.’’ Ms Kahl said she notified council this morning, and council officers were now at the lake. Late last year, thousands of dead fish washed up at the lake. Local residents were convinced then that Moreton Bay Regional Council had been pumping toxic water into the lake. High levels of ammonia and hydrogen sulphide were found in the water. Council, which initially blamed heat and low oxygen levels for the kill, appointed waterways specialists to investigate the health of the lake.
