Description:

Heavy rains and strong winds slowed the search Thursday for the eight people still missing following the sinking of a boat carrying 10 people off Chiloe Island in the southern Chilean , officials said. President Michelle Bachelet expressed her condolences to the victims’ families on Thursday. Searchers recovered the bodies on Wednesday of Alicia Guerrero, 38, and Solange Quevedo Espinoza, 3, two of the people aboard the Soledad II, which sank during a powerful storm in the Chacao Channel, located about 1,150 kilometers (715 miles) south of Santiago. The boat’s occupants were returning to their homes in the city of Ancud from the town of Carelmapu, where they attended a religious festival. Maritime officials had ordered boats to stay in port due to the bad weather, but the Soledad II’s captain sailed without permission. The search is being conducted on several fronts, Naval Zone chief Commodore Francisco Garcia Huidobro told Radio Cooperativa. “The plan is to utilize navy special forces divers to search for the bodies, which could be snagged in places near the coast,” Garcia Huidobro said. It is unlikely that anyone survived due to the extremely cold water temperatures, the navy officer said.
