Description: Three persons were killed and about 2,000 residents were evacuated from their homes after a barge docked in Barangay (Village) Sta. Maria, Bauan town, Batangas, emitted foul odor from chemicals Tuesday, police said Wednesday. Senior Superintendent Alberto Supapo, Batangas police director, identified the fatalities as Charmeil Allego, 23; Junnel Almohera, a Philippine Army reservist; and one known only as Waray. He said Guilberto Liverca, Roger Dela Pena, and Jayson Rodolfo were also rushed to hospitals for treatment of poisoning in the chemical leak. Sugapo said that at about 6 p.m. Tuesday, the Bauan police received a phone call regarding the chemical poisoning of six persons. Investigation showed that around 4:30 p.m. that day, the victims were repairing the old barge allegedly owned by Nilo Bantugon of Barangay Sta. Maria in Bauan. The six entered the basement of the barge, where alleged hazardous chemicals spread out and suffocated them. They were rushed to Bauan Doctors Hospital, but three were declared dead on arrival. Three others were treated and were still under observation. At about 11:30 p.m., Red Cross Batangas City and Bauan Mayor Ryan Dolor, ordered the immediate evacuation of the 2,000 residents of the villages of Sta. Maria and San Pedro. The evacuees were brought to the Bauan Technical High School in Barangay Poblacion. They were assisted by the Batangas Provincial Public Safety Management Center, Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team, Bureau of Fire Protection, Maritime and Bauan police.
