Situation Update No. 1 On 2010-02-15 at 04:13:15 [UTC] Event: Landslide Location: India State of Himachal Pradesh Kinnaur district Number of Deads: 6 person(s) Number of Injured: 14 person(s) Situation: Cold conditions intensified in north India, with Jammu and Kashmir witnessing a fresh spell of snowfall and Himachal Pradesh a tragedy in which six persons were killed and 14 injured when a landslide washed out temporary sheds of labourers at a village in Kinnaur district, 150 km from here, on Sunday. The labourers were working for the JP group’s 1,000 MW Karcham-Wangtoo Hydro Power project. Among the dead were a 17-year-old girl, a resident of Kinnaur, while the rest were all Nepali labourers. Two persons were feared to have drowned in Sutlej river. Four of the injured were critical and referred to Rampur hospital in Shimla. Kinnaur S P Y S Pathania said, “The incident occurred at 7.45 am when many labourers were asleep. So far, this cannot be linked to tremors due to blasting at the hydro power site. It seems that after the recent rain and snowfall at the higher reaches, the boulders on the hills above the project site became loose and rolled down.” | |
