Event: Biological Hazard
Location: Indonesia Central Java Purbalingga district

Situation:

Bird flu killed around 5,500 chickens in Purbalingga district, Central Java, during January 2010, a local official said. Some 5,000 dead chickens were found at Tumanggal village and 500 at Pasunggingan village, said Hartono, head of the Purbalingga animal husbandry office, on Monday. The local authorities have conducted measures such as insecticide spraying, rapid testing and vaccination to prevent the bird flu or H5N1 virus from spreading to wider areas. Officials recorded 20 cases of the illness in humans last year in Indonesia, 19 of them fatal, the Health Ministry said in a statement early last month.
