Situation Update No. 1 On 2010-02-14 at 04:25:31 [UTC] Event: Vehicle Accident Location: Dominican Republic Distrito Nacional Between Santo Domingo and Boca Chica Number of Deads: 11 person(s) Situation: Eleven people were killed when a Dominican passenger bus plunged into the Caribbean Sea, the COE emergency-management office said. Among the dead were the bus driver, Roberto Familia, and a little boy, while 15 people were injured in the accident, of whom 12 have now been released from hospital, the COE said. The accident occurred after 7:00 p.m. Friday at Kilometer 11 (Mile 7) on the Las Americas expressway, which connects Santo Domingo with the eastern part of the country. The bus was designed to hold 30 people, though local emergency services did not say if the vehicle was carrying more people than those who were rescued from the waters of the Caribbean. Authorities are investigating the causes for the accident, but some witnesses told local media that it occurred when the driver tried to pass another vehicle. The bus conductor told authorities that the bus needed repair, which, in his opinion, caused it to plunge into the sea, said the local civil-defense director, Luis Luna Paulino. | | | | |
