Event: Flash Flood
Location: Mexico MultiStates States of Michoacan, Guanajuato and Mexico City

Number of Deads: 30 person(s)

Situation:

Ten people died in an avalanche of mud in central Mexico, raising the death toll from days of heavy rains to at least 30, emergency officials said. Authorities in the state of Mexico said the mudslide occurred Friday on a highway between Toluca and Temascaltepec, damaging several vehicles and cutting off four villages from outside help. They said the eight men and two women killed were from the Penuelas community of Temascaltepec and expressed fears that rescue efforts would turn up bodies of more victims. President Felipe Calderon toured flooded zones of western Mexico City, where tens of thousands of residents have been affected. Calderon also travelled to his home state of Michoacan, where officials had reported 18 deaths from mudslides and flooded rivers. In neighbouring Guanajuato state, authorities said two people had died and one was missing. In the capital, the flooding was limited to three zones. Mexico City Mayor Marcelo Ebrard called the rains "atypical" for the amount of water that fell during the normal dry season and for the concentration of the rain in a few places. "In many, many years, there has not been a phenomenon of this nature," Ebrard said.
