Most victims were women and children and still many others were feared to be trapped under the snow, the private TV ARY News reported. Due to heavy snowfall, the avalanches rolled over many houses late Wednesday night in Kundian valley's town Bagar Dara and other areas of Kohistan district, North West Frontier Province (NWFP), burying a large number of local residents alive. Heavy snowfall and rains have continued in Kohistan district in the past days, hindering the rescue efforts. Local people were engaged in the self help rescue operation, as rescue teams couldn' t reach because of the blockade of the roads due to landslide. Local officials have requested authorities in NWFP to send helicopter and heavy machinery for rescue operation. There were also reports that rescue workers using sticks and spades have recovered several survivors from snow.
