Situation Update No. 7 On 2010-02-03 at 20:26:26 [UTC] Event: Earthquake Location: USA State of Wyoming Yellowstone National Park Situation: An earthquake was felt Feb. 2 in Yellowstone National Park, according to the Wyoming State Geological Survey, (WGS). The 2.8 magnitude earthquake occurred at 7:44 p.m. approximately 10 miles southeast of West Yellowstone, Mont., and 20 miles east-northeast of Island Park, Idaho. It was located 3.4 miles below the surface. According to the WSG, the Tuesday quake was a continuation of the earthquake swarm that started Jan. 17. No injuries or damage were reported. The event brought the total number of recent earthquakes to 12, and seismic activity was ongoing as of 7 a.m. Feb. 3. The University of Utah Seismograph Stations (UUSS) reports that there have been more than 1,800 earthquakes in this latest swarm, ranging from magnitude 0.5 to 3.8. There have been multiple personal reports of ground shaking from observations inside the park and in surrounding areas for some of the larger events. UUSS reports that the swarm is likely the result of slip on pre-existing faults rather than underground movement of magma. | | | |
