Description:

Twenty-four people were killed and 35 others seriously injured when two buses collided yesterday in Handeni District on the Dar es Salaam-Arusha highway. Handeni District Commissioner Seif Mpembenwe told The Citizen from the accident scene that 22 people died on the spot while two died as they were being taken to Korogwe District Hospital. The accident took place near Sangau Village at around 2pm, and involved a Chatco Limited bus travelling to Dar es Salaam from Arusha and another bus christened "Mzuri" headed for Hedaru Township in Kilimanjaro Region. The collision occurred when the driver of one of the buses attempted to avoid a lorry that was parked on the road. "The cause of the accident is careless parking of a lorry that was being loaded with charcoal in the middle of the road," Mr Mpembenwe said, adding that the lorry driver and his loader had fled. The injured included the driver of the Mzuri bus, who suffered broken limbs. There was no immediate information on the driver of the Chatco bus. Many of the injured were taken to Korogwe District Hospital in a critical condition. A nurse at the hospital said doctors were working frantically to save the lives of the injured, adding that some may be referred to Muhimbili National Hospital in Dar es Salaam or KCMC Hospital in Moshi for specialised treatment. "The most important thing is to save the lives of those who have been brought to the hospital, many of who are in a critical condition,"said the nurse who did not want to be named because she was not authorised to speak to the media. She said hospital workers were also working with police to identify the bodies of victims killed in the crash. The names of those killed and injured could not be immediately established. Reports said traffic police commander James Kombe was last night travelling to the scene of the accident from Dar es Salaam. Yesterday's accident took place not very far from the place where 28 people died and 14 others were injured when a Mohammed Trans bus travelling to Dar es Salaam from Nairobi collided with a lorry in Korogwe District.
