Area: Turkey, Province of Edirne, Edirne-wide,

Description:

Torrential rains have swelled the Tundzha and Maritsa rivers flowing through Turkey, causing power outages and widespread flooding in the northwestern province of Edirne. Many houses, schools and farms remain under water, as do many historic sites including the city's famous bridges. Swollen rivers caused the evacuation of many houses in several districts. 'Life has effectively stopped here. These are unusual scenes, which we now see almost on a daily basis,' Edirne resident Ahmet Sonmez said. The floods cut the main highway which connects Bulgaria and Turkey when a river near the Bulgarian border crossing overflowed. Officials at the Kapikule checkpoint in Turkey's northwestern province of Edirne did not allow crossings to Bulgaria's Kapitan Andreevo. Kastanies-Pazarkule cross-border point connecting Turkey and Greece was also closed to traffic.
