Description:

Toxic gas released from a south Fulton County ice plant forced an evacuation and brought out a hazardous materials team last Wednesday night. A pressure valve opened on a tank filled with ammonia at the Arctic Ice company in College Park after 10 p.m. Wednesday. Workers at a nearby gas station could smell the leaking ammonia. "The Atlanta hazmat team arrived on scene, they suited up and they went inside to make sure there were no further leaks," said Tami Fowler of the College Park Fire Department. College Park firefighers evacuated the gas station, but nearby homeowners were spared. "All of the residents in the area were upwind of the incident," said Fowler. Investigators are trying to determine why the pressure built up in the ammonia tank. "The pressure relief valve was just doing what it was designed to do," Fowler said.
