2010-02-06 05:36:55 - Snow Storm - USA EDIS CODE: SS-20100206-24816-USA Date & Time: 2010-02-06 05:36:55 [UTC] Area: USA, State of Ohio, Ohio-wide, Damage level: Moderate (Level 2) Not confirmed information! Description: Governor Joe Manchin has declared a statewide State of Emergency in response to predictions of a massive snow storm. “The information I’m receiving from the state Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management and the National Weather Service suggests that this storm will bring large amounts of heavy, wet snow and ice that will hamper travel and could affect other services and utilities,” Manchin said. “We have already taken precautions in anticipation of this storm, but the State of Emergency provides additional resources that will enable us to better deal with the weather. Declaring the state of emergency allows the governor to direct special funds to the most impacted areas, which may not have been available otherwise, according to a release from the governor’s office. Manchin also ordered that the state’s Emergency Operations Plan go into effect and activated the state’s Emergency Operations Center. The state of emergency will remain in effect for 30 days unless later rescinded or extended via a proclamation from the governor. At the request of Ryan Thorne, the Monongalia County Director of Emergency Management, the Monongalia County Commission declared its own state of emergency. This means the county will be able to ask for assistance from the state government and follows the guidelines that the federal government has issued to apply for disaster assistance, according to a release from the Monongalia County Office of Emergency Management. Although the declaration does not affect travel or closures, the release says that emergency officials only want motorists to drive if necessary. The City of Morgantown, Town of Star City, City of Westover, Town of Granville, Town of Blacksville also declared their own states of emergency.
