2010-02-03 04:31:21 - Vehicle Accident - USA EDIS CODE: VI-20100203-24773-USA Date & Time: 2010-02-03 04:31:21 [UTC] Area: USA, State of Florida, Downtown Miami, Miami Damage level: Moderate (Level 2) Not confirmed information! Description: A small tug boat sank in the Miami River and disrupted the flow of other vessels for five hours. Salvage crews used a crane to pull the Minnie Mouse out of the river by late in the afternoon Tuesday and brought the crippled vessel to the northern bank of the river. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, another tug boat was able to rescue the Minnie Mouse's operator from the river, and he is expected to recover. The tug had been towing the cargo ship the Bimini Cat to the open ocean when it began to sink near the bridge that connects Brickell to Biscayne Boulevard in Downtown Miami. U.S. Coast Guard Commander Brian Cove shared his theory as to why it sank. "She must have got tripped up on the tow and tank, and we responded, shut down the river to all inbound and outbound traffic," he said. The commander believes most boats affected by the sinking were fishing vessels and trade was not affected. Salvage crews also set up boons to contain a fuel spill as a result of the sinking. The Minnie Mouse was carrying 70 gallons of diesel on board when it sank. Crews were able to stop the leak before too much fuel spilled, and they do expect to have most of what spilled contained with the boons.
