Description: A traffic crash involving a school bus shut down North Kerr Avenue in both directions for about an hour Wednesday afternoon. The crash occurred at 3:39 p.m. at an intersection a few blocks north of Market Street and sent about a dozen people, including approximately 10 Noble Middle School students, to New Hanover Regional Medical Center, officials said. None of the injuries appeared serious, and all of the students who were expected to go to the hospital were going only as a precaution, according to officers with the Wilmington Police Department’s traffic unit. Officer J.E. Moore II said the school bus driver, Otis Hames Jr., 80, pulled away from McClelland Drive without yielding to traffic on North Kerr. Hames did stop at the stop sign and had dropped off students before pulling into the intersection, Moore said. As the bus crossed North Kerr, a white Nissan Altima, headed north, crashed into the middle section of the bus. Bernadette Kroes, 46, saw the wreck, and said the driver of the Altima slammed on her brakes but couldn’t avoid the collision. The Altima sustained heavy front-end damage, and its hood was bent upward. Part of the side of the school bus received minor damage. Kroes said a young child was traveling in the Altima, but the child didn’t appear injured. Moore said 25 to 30 students were on the bus when the crash occurred. The students watched out the windows as EMS workers loaded the driver of the Altima into an ambulance. One of the car’s passengers also was taken to the hospital. A few parents were on the scene and waiting for their children to be let off the bus. Moore said any children who complained of injuries and whose parents were not at the scene were taken to the hospital. Other children were put on a second bus and taken to their destinations.
