TOKYO (Reuters) - Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama and his powerful ruling party No.2 quit on Wednesday to try to boost the party's fortunes in an election next month, less than a year after sweeping to power with promises of change.

BP tries again to curb oil spill as stock falls anew

VENICE, Louisiana (Reuters) - BP Plc forged ahead with its latest effort to curb the flow of oil spewing into the Gulf of Mexico as the British energy giant's shares fell anew on Wednesday and the U.S. government launched criminal and civil probes into the disaster.

Israel deports flotilla activists after world outcry

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel said it would complete on Wednesday the deportation of all the pro-Palestinian activists seized in its raid on a Gaza aid flotilla and vowed to stop other ships from reaching the Hamas-run enclave.

GENEVA (Reuters) - A United Nations investigator called Wednesday for a halt to CIA-directed drone strikes on suspected Islamic militants, warning that killings ordered far from the battlefield could lead to a "Playstation" mentality.

China delays Gates trip in apparent snub for Taiwan

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - China has turned down a proposed fence-mending visit by the U.S. defense secretary, Robert Gates, during his trip in the region this week in what some American officials described as a snub to protest U.S. arms sales to Taiwan.
