Description:

Heavy rains in Gauteng are causing havoc on the province’s roads. Motorists were advised to drive slowly as roads were flooded by huge downpours in the greater Johannesburg area. This includes sections of the N1, M1 and Grayston Drive. Traffic came to a standstill in parts of Sandton as the rain bucketed down. Road works along Rivonia Road exacerbated the problem. Grayston Drive, one of the main roads into and out of Sandton, was gridlocked with cars backed up to Rivonia Road. Another affected road is Witkoppen between Sunninghill and Fourways. Emergency Services warned motorists to drive safely on water clogged roads and to watch out for flooding in low-lying areas. Stormy weather is passing over the province and the South African Weather Service is warning of heavy downpours over Ekurhuleni. Water rescue teams from Johannesburg Emergency Services are scouring the Jukskei River near Alexandra after unconfirmed reports of a person being washed away. The service’s Nana Radebe called on residents living near bodies of water to be extra careful. “In Alexandra, there the Buccleuch interchange, in Soweto, we’d like people to be very careful, and please do not speed,” she warned. Motorists can brace themselves for a long journey home.
