2010-02-17 04:38:38 - Epidemic Hazard - USA EDIS CODE: EH-20100217-24971-USA Date & Time: 2010-02-17 04:38:38 [UTC] Area: USA, State of Ohio, Ohio University, Athens Number of Infected person(s): 3 Not confirmed information! Description: An Ohio University student is hospitalized in Columbus with a probable case of bacterial meningitis. Andrea Robinson, a freshman from northeastern Ohio, is the third OU student this school year to be stricken. In October and earlier this month, two male students contracted bacterial meningitis, Dean of Students Ryan Lombardi said today. Both of the previous students made full recoveries. There is no apparent connection between Robinson, who lives in Wray House, and the sophomore who was diagnosed and treated this month, who lives at Bromley Hall, Lombardi said. Custodians disinfected rest rooms and other areas at Robinson's residence hall today, he said, and e-mail notifications were sent to the other students who live there. A meeting is scheduled at Wray House at 7 tonight to answer students' questions, Lombardi said. The university also is making available the antibiotic Cipro at the Student Health Service for anyone who would like it, he said. Bacterial meningitis can spread through contact with an infected person's saliva or by prolonged contact with the person. The illness infects the linings of the brain and spinal cord, and can progress quickly and be fatal. Symptoms include severe headache, stiff neck, disorientation, lethargy, nausea and vomiting.
