Situation Update No. 1 On 2010-03-30 at 16:33:02 [UTC] Event: HAZMAT Location: USA State of Texas Austin Situation: Police are on the lookout for six small cans of radioactive waste stolen out of the back of a company pickup truck that stopped at a Walmart in Alice on Friday night. The Texas Department of State Health Services sent out an alert Monday afternoon, noting a person handling the waste could be at risk of radiation exposure. The six containers, in a clear plastic bag, were taken from a toolbox in the back of a truck. Each metal container is shrink-wrapped and contains a glass vial of ceramic granules called radioactive tracer "sand," which is used in the oil and gas industry, according to the alert. The truck is owned by the Houston-based laboratory ProTechnics . The company is offering a $1,000 reward for infomration leading to the recovery of the containers. | | | |
