Description: A health board is investigating eight cases of salmonella at a Welsh hospital. Salmonella's symptoms can be severe and usually include watery or bloody diarrhoea, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and fever. It is usually associated with eating contaminated foods and person-to-person spread is also possible. An Aneurin Bevan Health Board spokesperson said: "We are currently investigating eight cases of salmonella in the Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport. The cases are being investigated by Aneurin Bevan Health Board, Public Health Wales and Newport City Council, Environmental Health. "We are contacting local GPs to alert them to the possibility of salmonella in patients presenting from the community with symptoms. Members of the public should continue to access healthcare in the usual way through NHS Direct or their own GP. The patients that have been tested positive are all recovering well.”
