The disease broke out a few months ago, and was mainly confined to families of some religious groups whose followers refuse conventional medical treatment. Health authorities said the disease had since spread to more areas, and appeared to be getting out of control. In total, 1,843 people had been affected countrywide, and 183 deaths recorded. Authorities have launched a massive campaign to vaccinate children under five in areas where the disease has been reported, but the effort appeared doomed due to dodging by members of the religious groups opposed to conventional medical treatment.
