2010-02-26 04:01:04 - Snow Storm - United Kingdom EDIS CODE: SS-20100226-25083-GBR Date & Time: 2010-02-26 04:01:04 [UTC] Area: United Kingdom, Scotland, Scotland-wide, Damage level: Heavy (Level 3) Not confirmed information! Description: Hundreds of drivers were left stranded on the A9 in Perthshire and about 5,000 homes across Scotland are without power as snow brought down electricity lines. Some drivers were stuck on the road, which is still closed between the Broxden and Keir roundabouts, from 0730 GMT until about 1930 GMT. Thousands of homes in Perthshire and hundreds in the Highlands will have no power overnight. Ministers were briefed at the Cabinet Sub Committee on Severe Weather. Tayside Police said the A9 was likely to remain closed until Friday morning. Earlier, members of the public with four-wheeled drive vehicles helped bring food and drinks to the stranded motorists. Snow also caused problems for medical evacuations from the Isle of Mull. An Oban RNLI lifeboat was called after a Cal Mac ferry failed to berth on the island after five attempts at 1700 GMT. Four patients were waiting to be transferred to the Lorn and the Isles District General Hospital on the mainland. Blizzard conditions made it impossible to send a helicopter to move the patients. Coxswain Ronnie McKillop said that the berthing conditions were "the worst he had experienced". Snow also disrupted rail services between Aberdeen and Inverness, Perth and Inverness and Glasgow and Fort William. Severe weather has been forecast to continue to affect the north of Scotland until the end of Friday when it will "die out", the Met Office said.
