Blood tests were carried out after he showed symptoms of the illness that had already claimed the lives of at least two injecting drug users in Glasgow. Initial laboratory tests conducted over the weekend have not shown the presence of anthrax in his system. A plea for vigilance was issued to drug users about a potentially contaminated batch of heroin. Dr John Ashton, director of public health at NHS Cumbria, said today: "This is encouraging news but injecting drug users in Cumbria should not let their guard down. “Anyone who injects drugs and experiences any unusual symptoms such as swelling or pain at the injection site should seek medical help immediately as anthrax can be lethal.” Police have stressed that taking drugs at any time is dangerous. Detectives have urged anyone with information about drug dealing in Cumbria to contact them on 0845 3300247 or Crimestoppers – 0800 555 111. | | | |
