Description:

A Coast Guard helicopter has hoisted four surfers to safety near Otter Rock, Ore., after they got caught by a rip current and then swept into a wave-lashed cove. Depoe Bay Fire District Lt. Dennis Knudson said three men and one woman -- all from the Salem area -- were rescued Thursday afternoon from heavy surf near the Devil's Punch Bowl. Four other surfers in their group managed to make it to shore on their own. And Knudson says those eight are just the latest in a series of surfers caught by the current and swept hundreds of yards out to sea. He says the fire district and a motorized life boat responded Wednesday morning to a report of one surfer in trouble but that person was able to reach shore. Knudson says fire crews and the life boat responded again Wednesday evening to three surfers in trouble. They also managed to reach shore before the Coast Guard helicopter reached the scene. In addition to the current, Knudson says there's been a lot of wind and rain this week.
