Description: Blue-Green algae has bloomed in Lake Albert and health authorities have warned people to avoid contact with it. SA Health's principal water quality adviser, Dr David Cunliffe, said growth of the organisms occurred naturally and could lead to patches of blue-green discoloured water and surface scums. "We're advising people to avoid direct contact with visible surface scums and not to swim in visibly affected waters," he said. "In large numbers, blue-green algae can cause irritations to the skin and eyes and ingestion of the algae can cause stomach upsets. "Dogs are particularly at risk as the organisms can stick to their coat and owners should keep them away from affected water."
