At least five persons, including a forest guard, were injured as a wild elephant and jackals attacked them in Orissa’s Ganjam district, official sources said today.“A forest guard was injured after being attacked by an elephant at Raipur near Digapahandi. Four others were injured when a jackal bit them at Barudi near Bhanjanagar on Saturday,” DFO Berhampur, A K Jena said. The forest guard was injured yesterday when he went to chase out the elephant from a village, he said. After straying from nearby Lakhari Valley elephant sanctuary, the elephant had destroyed several acres of standing paddy crop in the area. This is the second incident of locals being attacked by wild animals here in a week. One person was injured when a tusker attacked at Subalaya near Humma on Wednesday. The villagers had also blocked NH-5 for several hours demanding solution to elephant attack. Wildlife experts said the wild animals stray into the villages for food and water because of destruction of their habitat.
