Description: Thirteen persons were struck to death by thunder on Sunday [06.02.2010] in four villages in the Andoni Area of Rivers State, reported on Wednesday. An eye witness told the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday in Port Harcourt that the disaster rumbled through Asarama, Unyeada, Ngo and Akaradi communities and four bodies were recovered from the surrounding river, few hours after the tornado which equally destroyed houses, and uprooted economic trees. The source said that the corpses have been deposited at Otaije mortuary, Iyong Oron Asaram. According to the source, hundreds of persons were displaced by the disaster, resulting to scores of persons taking refuge in nearby villages. Lawson Heyford, the Chairman of the Federated Correspondents’ Chapel of the National Union of Journalists, Rivers State Council and an indigene of the area, described the incident as “very painful.” “I feel highly pained at the situation and appeal to necessary government agencies to hasten up and assist the victims,” he said.
