Description:

Nelson City Council is monitoring the city's rivers for the blue-green algae that produces the toxin cyanobacteria. The presence of the toxin led to a warning against allowing dogs to swim in Nelson rivers last summer. The council says the naturally occurring algae is always present in rivers during this time of year. But it can bloom to dangerous levels with the right conditions of warm temperatures and low river flows. It can then become harmful to humans and animals, especially dogs, which have been known to eat the algae. Tests in Nelson rivers have detected the presence of toxic algae at low levels, well below the Environment Ministry guideline that requires further action, such as erecting information warning signs.

The name of Hazard: Blue-Green Algae (Toxik)
