Event: Cold Wave
Location: Mongolia Statewide

Situation:

Over half of the provinces in Mongolia are in need of humanitarian aid after extreme weather conditions struck the country. Severe temperatures of minus 40 degrees Celsius have caused the death of some two million livestock, while thick snow has left many Mongolians isolated without supplies, Unicef reports. The country's government has declared disaster status in 12 of the country's 21 provinces and seven others are also categorised as high risk. Rana Flowers, Unicef representative in Mongolia, said: "There are over 22,000 children in 265 dormitories in need of urgent assistance, but this number grows every few days as the severe conditions spread across the rest of the country, widening the net cast by the disaster." According to Unicef, the charity is collaborating with other non-profit organisations to provide food, fuel and warm clothing for children and families affected by the wintery conditions. It estimated a further $400,000 (£255,000) is needed to pay for medical supplies and equipment, while $322,000 is required to reach isolated communities with other life-saving supplies. Unicef UK raised £42.9 million for the organisation's work with children worldwide in 2008.
