More than thirty percent of trains are not running and over 100,000 passengers have been affected. In the capital, Stockholm, the metro system has also ground to a halt as above-ground stretches are impassable; people have been asked to stay home. Numerous public buildings such as schools, nurseries and sports halls have been closed for fear of their flat roofs collapsing under the weight of the snow.
