2010-02-10 06:12:09 - Extreme Weather - USA EDIS CODE: ST-20100210-24880-USA Date & Time: 2010-02-10 06:12:09 [UTC] Area: USA, State of California, , Los Angeles Damage level: Moderate (Level 2) Not confirmed information! Description: A storm system entered the region just before noon today. The system dropped marble sized hail in spots, had frequent lightning, and heavy snow in the mountain pass regions. The system was Pacific Storm Phil, a Category Five system on the Southern California Weather Authority outline. This system has a hazardous weather outlook issued a couple days before the event warning of frequent lightning over Los Angeles. On the morning of the event, the SCWXA issued a severe thunderstorm watch for a large part of the forecast area. Orange County and some of the Central Inland Empire did not receive thunderstorms, but had some funnel clouds reported. Funnel clouds were also reported in Los Angeles County as well as marble sized hail. The Storm Prediction Center's lightning strike tracker showed the area was lit up, confirming the SCWXA forecast for frequent lightning in the area. While the SCWXA cannot promise everyone will see thunderstorms in a watch box, the boxes only outline areas that are possible to have them, due to atmospheric dynamics. The NOAA Storm Prediction Center issues tornado watches for the country and tornadoes cannot be expected in all corners of a watch box. Some will see it, while others do not. If others do not, those are the people that say a forecast was busted when in reality if other areas in the box received the event it was a success. The second wave is predicted to not hit the Los Angeles metro area. Scattered showers will remain for the rest of the night in a pop up form according to the SCWXA special weather statement. SCWXA performed a live broadcast showing the radar, explaining storm dynamics, and gave updates to over 2,000 people at a time. A break is expected, weak offshore flow over the weekend and warmer temperatures.
