Situation Update No. 1 On 2010-03-29 at 03:10:03 [UTC] Event: Flood Location: China Province of Shanxi Wangjialing Coal Mine Linfen Number of Missing: 153 person(s) Number of Evacuated: 138 person(s) Situation: China's work safety authority says 153 workers are trapped in the tunnels of a coal mine in north China after a flood swept through. The State Administration of Work Safety said in a statement on its Web site Monday that rescuers were scrambling to reach the workers. Authorities had said Sunday night that 123 workers were missing. It wasn't immediately clear why the number jumped to 153 overnight. The official Xinhua News Agency reported that 261 workers were working in the Wangjialing Coal Mine when it flooded Sunday afternoon and 108 were lifted to safety. Although China's mine safety record has improved in recent years, it is still the deadliest in the world, with blasts and other accidents common. | | | |
