Description:

Unusually mild weather continues to cause problems for people living in central and coastal regions of Labrador. For close on two weeks, the temperatures have been hovering above the freezing mark and making a big difference on some streets in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, according to CBC reporter Peter Cowan. "It's more like a lake because from one snowbank on one side to the other it's completely covered in water," he said. "Some places it's up to 10 centimetres deep and that's creating problems for cars trying to make it through." The excess water run-off has resulted in flooded basements and parking lots that are too deep to walk or maneuver through. "Many parking lots are just simply unusable because they've become giant pools," Cowan said. Intensifying the melting snow is the large amount of rain eastern Labrador has been hit with in the last week. Roads in communities such as Happy Valley-Goose Bay, in central Labrador, and Natuashish, along the north coast, normally have a covering of hard-packed snow by this time of year. Cartwright normally receives four millimetres of rain during the month of February, but CBC weather specialist Ryan Snoddon said the community has seen 92 millimetres in the past eight days. The average daytime high during that time has been 2 C, substantially above the typical –9 C people are used to. The unseasonably warm temperatures have also been affecting other regions of Labrador. People in southern communities such as William's Harbour and Norman Bay are cut off from essential supplies because slushy ice is keeping snowmobiles from crossing the harbour to reach other communities. Weather conditions have also prevented planes from delivering supplies to the region.
