Event: Tropical Storm
Location: Cook Islands Statewide

Situation:

Tropical Cyclone Pat battered the tiny South Pacific island of Aitutaki, in the Cook Islands, damaging up to 90 per cent of the houses, according to reports reaching New Zealand on Thursday. Winds of more than 100 kilometres an hour brought down trees and cut power supplies on the island of just under 2,000 people, Cook Islands Police Commissioner Maara Tetava told Radio New Zealand. He said schools and government offices on the main island of Rarotonga had been closed and shops in the capital Avarua were boarded up as its 9,400 residents braced themselves for the cyclone. Tetava said tourist resorts on Aitutaki were reported to have escaped serious damage and there were no immediate reports of casualties. The Cooks comprises 15 islands spread over about 2.2 million square kilometres of ocean, with Rarotonga about 3,015 kilometres north-east of Auckland.
