Situation Update No. 1
On 2010-02-11 at 04:42:05 [UTC]

Event: Complex Emergency
Location: USA State of Delaware Delaware-wide

Situation:

The snowstorm has knocked out electricity for more than 33,000 Delmarva Power customers, and the company has been forced to pull some of its utility workers off the road and suspend repair work this afternoon because of poor visibility and hazardous driving conditions. More power outages are expected tonight as heavy snow combines with strong wind to knock down trees and limbs throughout the region. At 8:50 p.m., the company reported on its Web site more than 18,000 outages in New Castle County, 530 out in Kent County and 200 out in Sussex County, with another 13,300 out in Cecil County, Md. Hundreds of others are out in other areas of the Maryland Eastern Shore. Delaware Electric Cooperative crews in Kent and Sussex Counties have temporarily suspended operations due to visibility problems. The company reported 185 members without power. Delmarva Power crews in Kent and Sussex counties, as well as the Eastern Shore of Maryland, had been trying to restore power to customers who lost service during the current storm as well as the weekend blizzard, spokesman Matt Likovich said. They were pulled back in those areas until the weather improves. More than 50,000 Delmarva customers in Delaware and Maryland lost power during the weekend storm, though power had been restored to most of them, he said. The company has not pulled workers off the road in New Castle County or Cecil County, Md. "Safety remains our number one concern as we attempt to restore power to affected customers," said John Allen, vice president of Delmarva Power’s Bay Region, said in an e-mailed statement. Allen said the new snow will make it more difficult for crews to reach new outage locations.
