Some residents said they measured temperatures between 47°C and 49°C. Wesbank Primary School head Alewyn Hanekom said the temperature on the athletics track was 47,5°C, delaying a district athletics meeting until late afternoon. “The astro turf was so hot you couldn’t put your hand on it,” he said.
