Event: Heat Wave
Location: South Africa State of Western Cape Oudtshoorn

Situation:

More than 1000 ostriches died when a heatwave peaking at an official 46°C hit Oudtshoorn on Tuesday. “The heatwave and the ostrich deaths have really hurt agriculture, already suffering in this drought,” Agri Klein Karoo manager Piet Lodder said yesterday. Some residents said they measured temperatures between 47°C and 49°C. Wesbank Primary School head Alewyn Hanekom said the temperature on the athletics track was 47,5°C, delaying a district athletics meeting until late afternoon. “The astro turf was so hot you couldn’t put your hand on it,” he said.
