Description:

At least seven people drowned and six went missing as an overloaded small trawler capsized in river Machkata in Mehendiganj upazila on Sunday night. Five of the dead were identified as Hashem Bepari, 75, Ayasha Khatun, 65, Khairunnesa, 70, 11-month old Asia and eight-month old Jewel. The identities of the two other children could not be known immediately. All the victims hailed from Jangali area of the upazila. Police and survivors said the trawler which was carrying more passengers beyond its capacity sank with about 50 passengers on board at about 8:30pm near Mridharhat. The passengers, mostly women and children, were returning to their village Jangalia from Patarhat steamer Ghat. All but 13 passengers managed to swim ashore. Seven bodies were recovered so far while the six people, including Priya Begum, 4, Farul, 55, Tania, 30, Tajundhar Bepari, 65 and Khalilur Rahman, 65, remained missing. Rescue operation for the missing people are going on. Their relatives and a number of local people are waiting on the banks of the river. Local lawmaker Mejbahuddin and high government officials visited the spot this morning.
