Event: Vehicle Accident
Location: Italy Trentino-Alto Adige Bolzano

Number of Deads: 11 person(s)
Number of Injured: 30 person(s)

Situation:

A landslide derailed an Italian train killing 11 people and injuring 30 today. The accident happened near Merano, a small town close to the Austrian border. With the wreckage still on the tracks, rescuers were working to pull out bodies and find possible survivors. The line runs between the Adige river and mountains. A transport official in Bolzano, the biggest city nearby, said the landslide was caused by an irrigation pipe that burst , sending rocks, debris and water down onto the train at around at 9.30am local time (8.30am BST). At least one carriage was destroyed, its windows shattered, and it was only prevented from plunging into the river when it rolled into trees. Officials said it was a small, local train and it was not clear how many passengers were on board. The line is one of Italy's most modern and was opened only five years ago.
