Situation Update No. 1 On 2010-04-12 at 18:37:56 [UTC] Event: Climate Change Location: Peru Ancash Region Hualcan Number of Injured: 50 person(s) Situation: A huge portion of a glacier fell on a lagoon in Ancash on Sunday, generating a massive mudslide that affected the towns of Hualcán, Acopampa, Obrabaje, Queshquipachán and Pariacaca, located near the Hualcán peak, 28 km. North of Huaraz. According to preliminary reports issued by Civil Defense (Indeci), there have not been any fatalities, 4 missing persons and a total of 40 people affected; however, figures may reach 200 people, according to Indeci estimates. The towns in the area have been declared in emergency, since another glacier may fall down, and local residents are being evacuated, informs the regional President, César Álvarez. "There is a large crack, 100 mt long and 30 mt wide, in the Hualcan peak, and if it finally falls down on the lagoon, it would create a mudslide four times bigger that the previous one,” said Alvarez on RPP radio. He also said that they need a helicopter to check the area from air, so they have requested one to the central government, and they expect that mining companies such as Antamina and Barrick may help with heavy machinery for cleaning works. | | | |
