Event: Vehicle Accident
Location: Italy Trentino-Alto Adige Merano

Number of Deads: 7 person(s)
Number of Injured: 20 person(s)

Situation:

Seven people have died and at least 20 have been injured after a train derailed near the northern Italian city of Bolzano. Rescuers say the accident happened at around 9am after a landslide near to the town of Merano in the region of Alto Adige. Journalist Nick Pisa told Sky News one of the carriages is balancing over a river. "The scene has been described as horrific because of the carriage that is hanging over the river. "Rescuers are desperately trying to secure it. "The authorities are saying many people are still trapped in the wreckage." The news agency Ansa said the train slid down a slope beside the tracks and was stopped by two pine trees from plunging into a river below. Ansa said the railway line, in a mountainous region near the Austrian border, was opened in 2005 and is considered one of the most modern tracks in the country.
