Airline body seeks moves to reopen Europe airspace

PARIS (Reuters) - Airline industry group IATA called on Monday for steps to reopen European airspace shut down by a volcanic ash cloud and the European Commission said it may approve compensation for airlines losing $250 million a day.

Toyota expected to pay $16.4 million U.S. fine: source

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Toyota Motor Corp has agreed to pay a record $16.4 million fine to U.S. safety regulators in response to the government's claim that it knowingly delayed a massive accelerator pedal recall in January, a government official said.

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - A panel on Monday ordered a recount of ballots cast in Baghdad in Iraq's March 7 election, raising the chance of a reversal in the results that gave a cross-sectarian group backed by minority Sunnis a slim lead.

China quake death toll nears 2,000

YUSHU, China (Reuters) - The official death toll from an earthquake on China's remote Tibetan plateau last week reached 1,944 on Monday, but rescuers dug out two more survivors who had been trapped under rubble for more than 100 hours.

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran will start work on a new uranium enrichment nuclear plant, a senior official said on Monday, part of a big expansion of its nuclear program which has contributed to fears in the West it aims to build a bomb.
