Description:

A total of 15 people were transported to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics after an anhydrous ammonia leak reported at West Liberty Foods around 11:30 a.m. Friday, West Liberty Fire Department's assistant chief Tom Christensen said. West Liberty Foods is a meat-processing plant that processes mostly turkeys. Christensen said the 15 were treated for anhydrous ammonia inhalation, though no one was directly exposed to it. The leak originated on the roof, Christensen said, though he didn't know what caused the leak. The community of West Liberty, a town 20 miles from Iowa City, was not in any immediate danger, Christensen said. Surrounding agencies, including Johnson County Ambulance Service, helped transport the victims, which included a pregnant woman, to the hospital. Christensen described their injuries as moderate to minor and he expected them all to fully recover from their injuries. West Liberty Foods was evacuated after the leak was discovered, but Christensen said he believed the second shift would be allowed to return to work. Muscatine's Hazardous Incident Response Team, West Liberty Fire, West Liberty Police and numerous other local agencies remain on the scene at this time. Officials at the scene were directing all questions to their attorney, Dan Waters, who is based in Des Moines.
