Event: HAZMAT
Location: India Capital City Mayapuri New Delhi

Number of Injured: 5 person(s)

Situation:

Panic spread in Mayapuri Phase-2, West Delhi on Thursday, when a scrap dealer and three workers of his shop were accidentally exposed to a metal which was emitting harmful radioactive radiations. Deepak Jain, the shop owner, along with his three workers fell prey to those radioactive emissions and suffered burn injuries. They were immediately taken to Apollo Hospital soon after which they were shifted to AIIMS. Police was immediately contacted following which a team of nuclear radiation experts visited the spot to examine the suspicious object which turned out to be Cobalt-60. “They recorded strong radiation emission from the object, following which it was covered by the scrap as a temporary arrangement to contain the level of radiation,” a police officer said. Deepak, reportedly, had bought that piece of metal while negotiating for a scrap deal in Faridabad a week ago and had kept it in his shop's cupboard. When one of the workers of his shop took it out and started cutting the object, a white fluid oozed out, causing instant burn injuries. The owner lifted the piece himself on his worker's complaint and had instant burning sensation resulting in apparent blackening of skin. Delhi Police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat said: "There is mild radiation in the scrap shop. We have evacuated the nearby areas. Our prime concern is to neutralise the radiation. Our teams are working on it. We are very hopeful that it will be neutralised in some time."
